This page contains answers to common questions handled by our support staff, along with some tips and tricks that we have found useful and presented here as questions.
How long should my cover letter be?
Your cover letter should be one page and no longer. You should have no problem including all relevant information within one page. Besides, the hiring managers are very busy, so they probably won’t read anything longer than one page.
To whom do I address the cover letter?
This is where you need to do your homework. Call the company and find out who the open position reports to. Then send the resume and cover letter directly to them. Do not send it to Human Resources, it will not be properly read or understood.
What size paper and envelope should I use?
You should try to use letter size paper in white or ivory bond with LaserJet ink. Also use a standard #10 business size envelope.
Can I send out the same letter for each application?
You should try to create a unique cover letter for each job for which you are applying. Most hiring managers loathe form letters.
What do I do after I have sent the letter off?
You need to keep good track of where you send each cover letter and resume. Make sure you keep a log of your job search activities. Then you can write a follow-up email within a week or so to remind the person of your application.
